Plaines d'Abraham et controverse

Cet hiver, on a annulé la reconstitution historique de la bataille des Plaines d'Abraham (prévue pour l'été), pour des raisons politiques.

Maintenant, on permet la lecture d'un document historique et politique (le manifeste du FLQ) sur les mêmes Plaines, dans le cadre d'un événement littéraire.

Question : S'agit-il de deux poids deux mesures?

Michael Bryant Resigns from Invest Toronto

Following the charges laid against him yesterday, after the death of a cyclist, Michael Bryant released a statement, with the help of the public relation firm Navigator...

(Bryant had no choice but to resign from this job because the charges would be a distraction.
For Invest Toronto, for Mayor Miller, but first and foremost, for himself.
It is interresting to note that Bryant chooses to use this official letter to claim his innocence for the first time.)

Bryant's Statement

"Dear Mayor Miller:
I write to resign as CEO of Invest Toronto with immediate effect.
It was a huge honour to serve the City of Toronto by helping to
steer
Toronto's economy through these remarkable economic times and to put
together the framework for Invest Toronto.
I am deeply grateful for your confidence and the Invest Toronto
Board of
Directors' belief in my ability to take on such an important role.
It is
one that I loved and leave with considerable regret.
I do not believe, however, that I can continue in this position on
account of the circumstances of the past two days.
Let me be clear: I am innocent of the very serious accusations made
against me. It would, however, be unfair to you, the Board and above
all
to the residents of Toronto to allow this event to distract from the
vital efforts of Invest Toronto.
The CEO of Invest Toronto is a position that demands the full
attention
and energy of its owner. Torontonians demand no less.

Mayor Miller's Answer

*Today, I accepted the resignation of Michael Bryant as CEO of Invest
Toronto.
I want to thank Mr. Bryant for his part in getting the work of
establishing Invest Toronto off the ground. His vision for this
organization was clear and his commitment obvious. He is a dedicated
public servant with a unique gift that will be missed at Invest
Toronto.
His contributions during his regrettably brief tenure will go a long
way to helping Invest Toronto as we go about fulfilling our mandate to
attract international business investment and economic development to
this great city.
The events of Monday evening were tragic and sad on many levels.
My condolences remain with the family and friends of Darcy Allan
Sheppard.
My thoughts are also with Mr. Bryant and his family at this difficult
time.*

Équipes sportives et liberté de la presse...

- La LNH et les Maples Leafs de Toronto veulent restreindre la diffusion de matériel vidéo sur le web par les journalistes de la presse écrite. (from Ryerson Review of Journalism)

La NFL et la LNH essaient de contrôler l'information disponible aux amateurs en limitant la couverture des reporters sur le web.

D'une certaine façon, c'est compréhensible : elles tentent de protéger leurs franchises et leurs intérêts commerciaux.

Les ligues professionnels existent pour faire de l'argent.
Elles ont leur propre site web où ils offrent du contenu "exclusifs" à leurs amateurs.
Si les reporters de la presse écrite (ou même d'autres médias) commencent aussi à offrir du contenu vidéo sur le web, aux yeux des ligues, c'est de la concurrence qu'il faut contrôler.

Même chose pour un journaliste sportif qui offre une description du jeu en direct sur Twitter.
Les sites web des ligues sportives offrent déjà ce service et ne veulent pas se faire couper l'herbe sous le pied.

Sauf que...

C'est une chose de protéger ces intérêts commerciaux.
Mais ç'en est une autre de limiter la couverture des journalistes qui couvrent les équipes sportives.

Un des principes de la liberté journalistiques, c'est le droit que se réservent les organes de presse de choisir la méthode de diffusion de l'information.

Interdire aux médias d'utiliser le web et les médias sociaux comme Facebook et Twitter, au 21e siècle, c'est comme si on leur avait demandé, il y a 200 ans, de ne pas imprimer leurs nouvelles mais d'utiliser plutôt le crieur de rue.
