Liberal MPP'S afraid to loose their seat over Harmonized sales tax.
And they might be rigth...
They have been warning Dalton McGuinty about a backlash if the Liberal Government went ahead with the Harmonisation, tells the Toronto Star's Rob Benzie.
As the MPP's are spending this week in their riding, they will most likely get an earfull from their constituents. But the ultimate test will be coming in the 2011 General Election.
Other government in Canada have harmonized before.
Here is how they fared:
- 1991 Saskatchewan conservative Premier Grant Devine Harmonized; a few month later he lost 28 seats and the government, to NPD leader Roy Romanow (who had promised to scrap the tax).
- 1996 The Atlantic provinces Harmonized; In Nova-Scotia, 2 years later, the Liberals lost 21 seats.
Back in Ontario...
Wayyyy back... 1958.
Conservative Leslie Frost introduces the province's first sales tax (3%).
People hated it. They called it the Frost Bite.
A few months later, general election 1959, the Conservative lost 12 seats, but retained their majority. (thanks to my colleague J. McGrath for the info)
Will the Dalton McGuinty Harmonisation back-fire?
You can be sure the Conservative and the NDP will try to capitalise on it.
This week as they meet their constituents.
This summer during the BBQ circuit.
Next summer as the new tax comes into effect in June 2010.
And all year long until the next election.
It could mean the Libs will have a looong slooow bleeding of support until 2011.
Or it could give them enough time to stop the haemorrhage before they run out of blood.
